Okay, I checked in yesterday via FourSquare (a pretty cool new social networking and local exploration tool) and mentioned that I was buying stuff to make maple bacon donuts. The update posted to my Facebook status and not the least bit surprising, I had a couple of people comment asking if I’d suddenly gone ‘Homer Simpson’.
So, I decided I’d better explain AND share the results of my experiment.
The other night I was watching one of my favorite shows on the Food Network called ‘The Best Thing I Ever Ate‘. This particular episode was about all things bacon and one of the profiles was on these maple bacon donuts.
As every guy knows, bacon is the ultimate man food. And when paired with a light, fluffy donut with maple glaze…mmmmmmmmm.
Anyway, I thought it sounded good and wanted to try it. I mean we’ve all had breakfast where we swirled our bacon in the leftover maple syrup from the pancakes, right? So why not recreate that flavor experience in a one-dish-wonder?
So last night I tried my hand at my maple bacon donuts and I must say, they turned out pretty good. I found the recipe online, made a few tweaks, and had a go at it.
They turned out pretty light and fluffy, not Krispy Kreme-esque, but definitely light. I wasn’t crazy about the maple glaze recipe I used and I’ll most likely use a different one next time, but it wasn’t horrible either. And when you put it in your mouth, it has such a deep flavor profile and they definitely give you that ’swirl your bacon in leftover maple syrup’ experience I was hoping for.
So for all those wondering, I guess I do have a little Homer Simpson in me because I’ll DEFINITELY be making these again in the future!
So, as most of you know we live in beautiful Rock Hill SC, which for the most part enjoys a pretty moderate temperature during the winter months. I’ve been here in the Charlotte area for almost 10 years now and we’re usually good for one decent winter storm every year. This year however, has been different.
For the 3rd weekend in a row we’ve had a pretty decent sized winter storm, complete with some nasty precipitation. In fact, we got so much ice and snow three weeks ago that church was canceled. Last weekend it caused Sharon and I to make the decision to cancel our trip to run in the Krispy Kreme Challenge.
This weekend, who knows what will be canceled, but given the way these Southerners freak out over a little snow, I’m sure something will be canceled or postponed. As someone that grew up in North Dakota and Wyoming, I find it a little comical, but heh, if it means I have an excuse to stay home and be lazy I’ll take it!
